How to Start a Daily Photo Journal (and Keep It for a Year)
A daily photo journal takes seconds a day and gives you a year you can actually see. How to start, what to photograph, and how not to quit in February.
Most people who try to journal quit because writing is a chore. A daily photo journal lowers the cost to about five seconds: take one picture that sums up the day, and you are done.
A year later you have 365 pictures and a surprisingly complete memory of the year.
The one rule
One photo a day. That is the whole rule. No minimum quality, no editing, no caption required. The only way to fail is to skip, so make the bar low enough that you will not.
What to photograph
If you freeze on "what is the photo of?", use a default:
- the view from where you spent most of the day
- the meal you ate
- what was on your desk
- the person you spent the most time with (with their permission)
- your feet, wherever they ended up
Pick one subject for a themed journal: your breakfast, your commute, your garden, your drawing of the day.
Make it a habit, not a mood
Link the photo to something you already do at the same time every day: brushing your teeth, shutting your laptop, getting into bed. Set a reminder for that moment.
Add one line
A caption of a few words is plenty: "Rain all day, finished the book." Captions are what turn a camera roll into a journal, and they are what you will enjoy most in a year.
Do not use your camera roll
Daily photos buried between 10,000 others are never seen again. A separate place with a day number and a timeline keeps the journal visible. In Safar, each photo you log against a promise is stamped with its day ("Day 83") and kept on a scrollable wall, filterable by promise.
When you miss days
You will. A photo journal forgives this: a gap is just a blank page. Pick it up the next day. Do not backfill with old photos or the journal stops being honest.
At the end of the year
Build a film. A year of daily photos at 12 frames per second is about 30 seconds (calculator). It is the sort of thing you will watch every New Year.
